How to Pick the BEST Watermelon

0

One of my kids’ favorite summertime treats is watermelon. I love the red juice dripping down sweet little sticky cheeks in the hot summer sun. It just reminds me of summertime. I’ve been told by many people that I pick out the best watermelon and I’ve decided to share my little trick on how to do it.

Naturally, I spent years staring at watermelon…knocking on it and smelling it, pretending like I knew what I was doing at the grocery store. I remember having a conversation with a woman about watermelon while we were both standing over the big barrel trying to pick ours out. Who knew there was so much to talk about when it comes to watermelon?! Who knew it could be a conversation piece?

Oh, but it totally is.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover and this is also true with watermelon. The perfect looking watermelon with bright green stripes that looks like it was just freshly picked is not the one you want. My trick is to pick the ugliest watermelon. Pick the one that has a nice yellow field spot and has webbing in the coloring. It may not look like the picture-perfect watermelon. However, chances are on the inside it will be bright red, sweet and juicy, and delicious.

Isn’t it funny how life lessons that we’ve always been taught growing up can be used in picking out fruit?

So, let’s stop judging a book by its cover. Pick the ugly watermelon, it’ll be worth it!
