The old saying, “it takes a village to rise a child”… still true. If you’re a parent, no matter how many children you have, you know all the time, energy, and extra help it takes to care for them each day. But for many of us we find ourselves short on all of those.
Having a “village” can be extremely beneficial. Someone to watch the kids when you need a break, a support group of friends to get advice from, someone to help with dinner when you’re too busy to cook.
For many years, I have wondered, where is my village? I have a very small family that does not live anywhere near me. How am I supposed to do all of this without the help of others?
I have envied my friends and their seemingly large “villages” filled with grandparents that watched their children while they went to work and easily found babysitters for date nights.
Until I finally realized that I have had a “village” all along, it just looks a little different.
Instead of a helpful grandparent, I’ve had to fill my village with daycares and nannies. Instead of a friendly neighbor bringing over a casserole, a food delivery driver has saved dinner many times. Even something as simple as Paw Patrol, to help entertain my children, is welcome in my village. And I cannot forget mom groups, even online, just having others you can relate to and connect with is beyond helpful when you’re feeling alone, as a mom.
It might not be the traditional “village” but it works. And however your village looks, mama, you are still a wonderful mother doing a great job!
