Masha and the Nutcracker: Gather the family around and create a new Christmas Tradition!

The Christmas season is upon us, bringing with it the joyous traditions that make this time of year so special. While decorating the Christmas tree and sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace are cherished customs for many families, Northwest Ohio has a unique tradition—Masha and the Nutcracker. This enchanting comedic Christmas ballet, now in its fourth annual production, is quickly becoming a beloved holiday staple for families across the region.

The storyline, set in the year 1816 on Christmas Eve, revolves around the Vsevolozhsky children eagerly awaiting the arrival of their guests. The evening unfolds with a party filled with excitement and the unveiling of Uncle Ivanov’s magical trunk, brimming with carefully chosen gifts. Among the treasures is a peculiar German nutcracker that captures the heart and imagination of young Masha. As the night progresses, Masha embarks on a dreamy adventure, encountering a fierce battle, a swirling blizzard, and a magical land where her beloved nutcracker transforms into a gallant prince.

The grand Marathon Center for the Performing Arts in Findlay, Ohio sets the stage for this Christmas fairytale. According to Sophia Jarrell, Executive Director of the Black Swamp Fine Arts School, “The theater’s grandeur creates the perfect backdrop for a production of this caliber. As you enter the theater, you will be transported into the world of Masha and the Nutcracker, where dreams come to life!” Full performances of the ballet are scheduled for Friday, December 15th at 7:30 PM, and Saturday, December 16th, with a matinee at 3:00 PM and an evening performance at 7:00 PM.

Children are welcome at all of the performance times, but for mamas with teeny tiny little ones, there’s a special Toddler-Friendly Performance on Saturday, December 16th, at 1:00 PM. This abbreviated adaptation, lasting approximately 45 minutes, is designed to cater to toddlers’ attention spans. Children will be captivated by the energetic dancing and the beautiful music while experiencing a theater environment that is more brightly lit and a quieter soundscape. The delightful sounds of toddler excitement are welcome! Following the performance, families can meet Masha, the Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy, creating cherished memories for both children and their adults.

To secure your tickets for the theater production, visit mcpa.org or call 419.423.2787 ex. 100. Tickets will also be available at the box office one hour prior to each performance. Whether you’re a seasoned ballet enthusiast or attending a ballet for the first time, Masha and the Nutcracker is sure to captivate the hearts of all!

For those seeking an even more intimate and immersive experience, the annual Masha & Nutcracker Sweets & Treats Event is an excellent addition to your Christmas festivities. This party will be held at Simpson Garden Park Banquet Hall in Bowling Green, Ohio on Saturday, December 2nd. Along with Masha and her family, enjoy performances by dancing sweets and partake in delicious treats. Decorate a cupcake to suit your fancy, learn a regency era game, and create a Nutcracker-themed craft! The event also highlights the historically inspired connections between the dancing sweets and the countries to which they correspond. Dressing in Regency attire is welcomed, but not required! Seating is limited, so be sure to make reservations soon!

Seatings for the Masha & the Nutcracker Sweets & Treats Party are offered at 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM & 4:00 PM. Reservations must be purchased online in advance on Black Swamp Fine Arts School’s website.

As you embark on this festive season, consider making Masha and the Nutcracker a part of your family’s Christmas traditions. It’s a heartwarming experience that brings the magic of the holidays to life, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
