Why Moms Seek Chiropractic Care for Their Kids?

0

Chiropractic care for the whole family, specifically babies and children has been gaining popularity over the past few years. What was once reserved for the “older population” to fix bad backs and achy necks is now proving to be of benefit for moms and their children.

So being that we are a resource for local moms, by local moms, I figured what would be better than asking other moms about their experience with Chiropractic care? After all, isn’t that always our “go to” when getting advice? We ask other mom’s for referrals or what worked for them.

I sent out some questions for some local moms who visit Innate Health Chiropractic, in Perrysburg, on a weekly basis. I wanted to know what led them to seek care, why they stay and what have they seen in terms of benefits?

Interview: Mom 1

What was the initial reason you decided to seek out Chiropractic care for your child/children? I decided to start chiropractic care when my son was born.  He has colic and cried for WEEKS straight when he was born. His throat was raspy from crying so much.  I tried everything, and I knew there had to be another solution for him.  A friend recommended that I try chiropractic adjustments for him. I saw an improvement in him very quickly.   I was so thankful- and so was he.   Now our whole family comes in for adjustments.

Had you tried other options or medical treatments for this prior to Chiropractic? Other Chiropractors?Yes! The doctor had recommended all kinds of antacids for him, and I just didn’t feel right giving that to my baby.

How often do you take your child in for visits? When he was little he came in for adjustments 2 times a month.  Now we all get adjusted monthly.

What changes or results have you noticed? I can tell when it’s time for our appointments.  The kids get irritable and crabby, and they just don’t function as well.  Then when Dr. Nick adjusts them, it’s like they get an attitude adjustment too- haha.

How does your kid handle the adjustments? Nervous? Look forward to them? All my kids love their adjustments- even my toddler.  My kids love that the Innate office is kid friendly and so welcoming.  They love playing with the toys, and seeing all the other kids there.  They look forward to going every month.

What was the initial reason you decided to seek out Chiropractic care for your child/children?

My chiropractic journey actually initially began with myself seeking treatment for residual neck pain following cancer accident. Because I’m a Mom, naturally, my child was with me at every appointment. After learning about my son’s sensory challenges Dr Nick suggested chiropractic care could be beneficial to him. To be honest when he first suggested it…I kind of brushed him off because I didn’t think my son would tolerate being adjusted. As we continued to come in for my appointments Dr Nick worked to establish a trusting relationship & bond with my son….before long my son was asking to be adjusted & was completely willing to jump up on the table for pretend adjustments from Dr Nick.

Had you tried other options or medical treatments for this prior to Chiropractic? Other Chiropractors?

At the time when Dr Nick suggested chiropractic care my son was also in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy. My initial thought was if we are doing all of these things and still not having a lot of improvement then why would chiropractic care be any more beneficial and is it worth trying to squeeze one more appointment into our already busy schedule?

How often do you take your child in for visits?

We are currently on maintance adjustments which are every 2 weeks. When we began chiropractic care adjustments were initially 3 times per week, then tapered down to 2 adjustments per week, then 1, and finally a maintenance adjustment schedule.

What changes or results have you noticed?

The first thing I noticed was an increase in sensory awareness. My son had a significant delay in perception when it came to hot and cold. It was like he didn’t feel it. I have an electric fireplace & always had to be sure his step stool wasn’t near it because he would stand in front of it and not even realize it was burning his legs. After a couple of weeks of adjustments one day I had forgotten to move the step stool. He climbed up on it & was standing in front of the fireplace and it was like a light bulb went off. He looked at me and said “Ow that’s hot!” and climbed right down. I was shocked. Gradually I began to see huge gains in his fine motor skills which were also delayed. Those gains seemed to always coincide with timing following an adjustment. Along with fine motor gains & sensory awareness I have also seen a decrease in general anxiety.

How does your kid handle the adjustments? Nervous? Look forward to them?

He looks forward to his adjustments & is always counting down the days until his next one. If he’s having increased anxiety or feeling off he will even ask if he can go in for an extra adjustment & never hesitates to tell the Drs on those days he feels like he needs an “attitude adjustment” which is the phrase he uses to let them know he’s struggling with anxiety & regulation.

Interview: Mom 3

What was the initial reason you decided to seek out Chiropractic care for your child/children?

All my children receive Chiropractic care but my one son…….

My son was my major concern about 8 years ago. He was diagnosed with autism and a friend said her son had refitted from seeing a chiropractor.  I was willing to try anything

Had you tried other options or medical treatments for this prior to Chiropractic? Other Chiropractors?Yes we had spent many years in physical therapy,  occupational therapy, cranial sacral therapy, sensory therapy and seen a naturalist.

How often do you take your child in for visits? We are at a twice a month schedule but have been faithful for around 8 years

What changes or results have you noticed?  In the beginning his overall health improved significantly. He could function in a normal setting with ease, he made better eye contact, he could do push ups and sit ups, he quit wetting the bed after 4 adjustments and his ability to hold a pencil and write improved with in the first week of adjustments.

How does your kid handle the adjustments? Nervous? Look forward to them?  In the being he had to be convinced and was slow going to allow the dr to touch him. Once trust was established he did ok when everything was explained if something new was to happen he had to be promised it would be ok. Now at almost 18 he knows when he needs an adjustment and really does look forward to them. Also knows if anything simple goes wrong with his health a common cold, flu or sinus to ear infection or a migraine he will ask how soon till he sees his Dr. NICK. Our lives have been changed and our perspectives on the overall health through Chiropractic forever. I know in the future we will seek and my son will seek Chiropractic care for himself and his children. We know there are great benefits to being adjusted
